Gangotri – Ashu Tour and Travels

Gangotri is another significant pilgrimage destination in India, located in the state of Uttarakhand, in the Garhwal Himalayas. It is the source of the Ganges River, one of the holiest rivers in Hinduism. Gangotri is part of the Char Dham Yatra, along with Yamunotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, and it attracts millions of devotees and spiritual seekers every year.

Key Features of Gangotri:

  1. Gangotri Temple:
The main attraction at Gangotri is the Gangotri Temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. This temple is believed to have been built by King Bhagirath, the legendary king who brought the river Ganga to the earth from the heavens. The temple is situated at an altitude of 3,100 meters (10,171 feet) above sea level and is built in the traditional pahadi (hill) architectural style with a white marble structure.
  2. Source of the Ganges River:
The true source of the Ganges River is the Gaumukh Glacier, located about 18 km from the Gangotri Temple. The river at this point is known as Bhagirathi until it meets the Alaknanda River at Devprayag, where it becomes the Ganges. The trek to Gaumukh is one of the most popular treks in Uttarakhand, offering incredible views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks.
  3. Mythological Significance:
According to Hindu mythology, the Ganges River originally flowed in the heavens. King Bhagirath performed severe penance to bring the river down to earth to purify the souls of his ancestors. As a result of his efforts, the river descended from the heavens and touched the earth at Gangotri. It is believed that taking a dip in the waters of the Ganges here at Gangotri can cleanse one of their sins and help attain salvation (moksha).
  4. Scenic Beauty:
Gangotri is surrounded by some of the most majestic landscapes in the Indian Himalayas. The area is filled with lush forests, snow-capped peaks, and pristine rivers. The Bhagirathi Peaks are particularly stunning and stand tall over the Gangotri region. The river flowing from Gaumukh creates breathtaking views that draw trekkers and nature lovers alike.
  5. Trekking to Gaumukh:
The trek to Gaumukh, the source of the Ganges, is a challenging yet rewarding adventure. The 18 km trek from Gangotri to Gaumukh takes you through a beautiful alpine landscape, with opportunities to spot diverse flora and fauna. The trek provides breathtaking views of the Bhagirathi group of peaks and leads to the Gaumukh Glacier, where the river emerges from the ice.
